Why It Matters
- Tracks Institutional Flow: Identifies whether smart money is accumulating (buying) or distributing (selling) an asset behind the scenes.
- Volume Precedes Price: Volume often changes before price breaks out. OBV helps capture these changes early.
- Filter for Breakouts: Helps validate whether a breakoutBreakoutA price movement through an established support or resistance level. OBV Calculation Method
OBV is a cumulative total calculated using the following conditions:
| Close Condition | Calculation Formula | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Current Close > Previous Close | OBVcurrent = OBVprev + Volumecurrent | Up-day volume is added. |
| Current Close < Previous Close | OBVcurrent = OBVprev − Volumecurrent | Down-day volume is subtracted. |
| Current Close = Previous Close | OBVcurrent = OBVprev | No change in OBV. |
How to Trade Using OBV

Common Beginner Mistakes
[!WARNING]
- Ignoring the Absolute Value Context: Focus on the direction and slope of the OBV line rather than the absolute number, which is arbitrary and depends entirely on the history of the data series.
- Chasing Divergences in Strong Trends: Selling short immediately on a bearish divergenceBearish DivergenceA chart formation where price makes a new higher high, but the momentum indicator prints a lower high.Read full glossary entry → during a massive, macro uptrendUptrendA market direction characterized by a sequence of higher highs and higher lows.Read full glossary entry →. - Trading Without Price Action: Entering trades solely because OBV shifted, without confirmation from price candlesticks or levels.
