What is a Marubozu?
The Marubozu (丸坊主) is an unmistakable, powerful single-candlestickCandlestickA method of displaying financial price data that shows the open, high, low, and closing prices of a security for a specific time period.Read full glossary entry → pattern named after the Japanese word for "bald" or "shaved head." This name reflects the candle’s defining characteristic: a long, solid real body with no upper or lower shadows (or wicks so tiny they are barely visible).
A Marubozu represents the purest expression of total directional dominance. When a Marubozu appears, price traveled in a single direction from the opening bell to the closing bell without any meaningful counter-trendTrendThe general direction in which a security or market is moving over time.Read full glossary entry → resistanceResistanceA price level where selling pressure is strong enough to prevent the price from rising further. Types of Marubozu
There are two primary types of Marubozu:
- Bullish Marubozu (White/Green):
- Open = Low: The session opens, and price never drops below the opening price.
- Close = High: Buyers drive price up relentlessly throughout the session, closing at the absolute high.
- Significance: Massive, unyielding buying pressure.
- Bearish Marubozu (Black/Red):
- Open = High: The session opens, and price never rallies above the opening price.
- Close = Low: Sellers drive price down continuously, closing at the absolute low.
- Significance: Massive, unyielding selling pressure.
Detection Rules
To confirm a textbook Marubozu:
- Long Real Body: The candle must have a significantly larger body than the average candle in the preceding 10–20 sessions.
- No (or Negligible) Wicks: The open must be equal to the session low (for bullish) or session high (for bearish), and the close must be equal to the session high (for bullish) or session low (for bearish).

Market Psychology
The internal mechanics of a Marubozu reveal total capitulation of one side:
- Opening Conviction: From the opening bell, aggressive market orders hit the order book in one direction.
- No Pullbacks: Normally, rallies experience intraday profit-taking pullbacks that form shadows. During a Marubozu, every minor dip is instantly absorbed by aggressive market participants.
- Short Squeeze / Long Liquidation: Counter-trend traders are caught completely off-guard. In a Bullish Marubozu, short sellers are forced to cover their positions at market price, adding more buying momentum.
- Closing at Extremes: Price closes at the exact extreme of the day, leaving the losing side demoralized and the winning side in total control.

Common Mistakes
- Chasing at the Very Top: Because a Marubozu candle is very large, buying at the close means your stop-loss (placed at the candle low) is far away. If the risk distance is too large, wait for a shallow pullbackPullbackA temporary price pause or moderate retracement against the primary trend direction.Read full glossary entry → toward the midpoint of the Marubozu body before entering.
- Ignoring Volume: A long candle on light holiday volume is often a "liquidity vacuum" rather than genuine institutional buying. Always verify volume expansion.
- Trading in the Middle of Nowhere: A Marubozu in the middle of a choppy range can often be an exhaustion climax rather than a sustained reversal. Look for Marubozu candles that break clean through structural levels.
